Boxing has a long and eventful history and its drama, excitement and humor are covered in this fascinating account of the noble—and sometimes ignoble—art all over the world. It covers the bare-knuckle days when the Duke of Cumberland callously abandoned his protégé Jack Broughton when the latter could no longer fight on because he was blind as well as the famous fight in 1964, when the charismatic Muhammad Ali knocked out Sonny Liston with a phantom punch that no one in the audience saw thrown. It also highlights the advent in the 21st century of the dreaded Beast from the East, the 7-foot-tall Russian Nikolai Valuev who powered his inexorable way to the world heavyweight title. This book presents a vivid picture of the sport rightly referred to as the hardest game

This volume spotlights such greats as Gentleman Jim Corbett, Joe Choynski, Jack Johnson, Battling Nelson, Stanley Ketchel, and 1904 Olympic heavyweight champion Sam Berger. Excerpt: Against the Ropes Against the Ropes is a 2004 drama movie . It was directed by Charles S. Dutton , in his motion-picture directorial debut. It is a fictionalized account of the American boxing manager Jackie Kallen , who was the first woman to become a success in the sport. Luther Shaw most likely represents James Toney , a boxer whom Kallen managed to a title despite a rocky relationship. Against the Ropes grossed less than $6 million in the US and was panned by critics, in part because of the resemblance to nearly all the other boxing movies, such as the Rocky series. As with other such movies, its climax is a bout for the championship. The film was shot primarily in Hamilton, Ontario , Canada at the Copps Coliseum . Plot The film begins with Jackie learning the boxing game with her father and uncle in a small gym when she is just a small girl. Later, she becomes the assistant to a Cleveland boxing promoter. Jackie’s boss then begins doing business with Sam LaRocca, a sports manager, during a middleweight championship fight. After the fight, LaRocca asks Jackie what she thought of the fight. Obviously unimpressed with Jackie’s knowledge of boxing, LaRocca offers her the fight’s loser’s contract for a dollar. She goes to visit the fighter at home, only to find him addicted to drugs. Enter Luther Shaw, a small time hood, based partly on James Toney . Kallen watches in mixed horror and fascination as Shaw pummels the former middleweight champ. She offers to manage him professionally. Although Shaw is at first hesitant,

Excerpt: During the 1950s, a couple of relatively new developments changed the world: World War II had only been over for five years when the decade of the 50s began, and television was beginning to make a major impact internationally. In boxing, changes connected to these developments could be seen too, as boxers who fought at the 1940s conflict returned to their homes and many of them were back in the ring. Television producers were in love with sports, which provided the viewer with an opportunity to observe sporting events live, and boxing was not the exception to the rules; many television networks began to feature fights live during the weekends, and the Gillette Friday Night Fights proved to be one of the most popular boxing television series in American history. The dawn of the jet airplane era in 1958 also helped boxing expand worldwide: with airplanes flying faster and more frequently between cities far away from each other, more and more world title fights began to be fought outside the United States. Vic Toweel became South Africa’s first world boxing champion, Jimmy Carruthers did the same for Australia, Pascual Pérez was the first from Argentina, Yoshio Shirai (who was beaten by Pérez), won Japan’s first world title, and Hogan Bassey won the first belt for Nigeria. Popular American fighters in the 1950s proved legendary: Sugar Ray Robinson would still win (and lose) world titles, Rocky Marciano became the only heavyweight world champion in history to retire undefeated. Jersey Joe Walcott the oldest heavyweight chamapion (until George Foreman regained the title in 1994), Archie Moore broke the all-time knockout record as well as the record for the oldest champion, at 48, for any division, Ezzard Charles proved to be a reliable substitute …

Excerpt: During the 1970s, boxing was characterized by dominating champions and history making rivalries. The decade had many super-stars, but these super-stars also had fierce rivals. Alexis Argüello, for example, who won the world Featherweight and Jr. Lightweight titles during this decade, had to overcome Alfredo Escalera twice before the decade was over. At least six divisions had world champions who could be considered dominant: The Bantamweights had Rubén Olivares, the Super Bantamweights, (a division created in 1976) had Wilfredo Gómez winning the title in 1977 and keeping it until 1983, when he left it vacant. The Lightweights had Roberto Durán, who won the title in 1972 and vacated it in 1979 to seek championships at other weights, the Jr. Welterweights had Antonio Cervantes, who reigned twice in the division, the Middleweights had Carlos Monzón, sometimes referred to as King Carlos because of his seven year reign as world champion, the Light-Heavyweights had Bob Foster. The Heavyweights, of course, had Muhammad Ali, who ruled twice between 1974 and 1979. Another aspect of boxing in the 1970s is that the decade of the ’70s is considered by a few to be the best ever for the Heavyweight division: Ali returned in 1970 from his forced retirement, and Joe Frazier was world champion when Ali returned. Former world champions Jimmy Ellis and Floyd Patterson as well as George Foreman, Oscar Bonavena, Jerry Quarry, Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks, Ken Norton, as well as Larry Holmes, Ron Stander, Chuck Wepner, Jose King Roman, Light Heavyweight champ Foster, John Tate, Jimmy Young, Ron Lyle, Joe Bugner, Scott LeDoux and many others added intrigue to the division. Don King surged as a leading boxing promoter, and champions Duran, Monzon and Ali had

Excerpt: Boxing in the 1980s was filled with important fights, events and personalities that shaped the sport. Boxing in the 1980s was shaped by many different situations, such as the continuous corporate battles between the different world sanctioning organizations, the void left by Muhammad Ali as the sport’s ambassador and consequent search for a new boxing hero, the continuous presence of Don King as the sport’s most famous promoter, the surge of rival promoters as Bob Arum, Butch Lewis and Murad Muhammad, and major rule changes. In 1986, Mike Tyson crowned himself world Heavyweight champion, and he was considered by many to be the savior of the Heavyweight division, which had seen a decline in champion quality level (particularly in the WBA side) after Ali’s retirement and, later on, after longtime WBC ruler Larry Holmes’ prime. In addition, the IBF and WBO began operating. Another important aspect of boxing in the 1980s was the rivalry between five world champions: Wilfred Benítez, Roberto Durán, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard. Of all the possible match-ups between these five, Benitez-Hagler was the only one that never happened. The circle of fights between these five gladiators actually began on November 30, 1979, when Leonard beat Benitez by knockout in round fifteen to win the WBC world Welterweight title, on the same night Hagler drew (tied) with Vito Antuofermo in his first bid to become the world’s Middleweight champion. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=353662

Excerpt: Million Dollar Baby is a 2004 American film directed, co-produced, and scored by Clint Eastwood and starring Eastwood, Hilary Swank, and Morgan Freeman. It is the story of an under-appreciated boxing trainer, his elusive past, and his quest for atonement by helping an underdog amateur female boxer (the film’s title character) achieve her dream of becoming a professional. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The screenplay was written by Paul Haggis, based on short stories by F.X. Toole, the pen name of fight manager and “cutman” Jerry Boyd. Originally published under the title Rope Burns, the stories have since been republished under the film’s title. Margareth Fitzgerald, a waitress and aspiring boxer, leaves her Missouri town in the Ozarks for Los Angeles, where she trains in the gym of Frankie Dunn, a brilliant but down-and-out boxing trainer who has been cast aside by his colleagues and relatives, including his estranged daughter Katy. Dunn initially refuses to train Maggie because she is a woman and almost 32 years old. Maggie, however, perseveres in her attempts to win Dunn over by training each day in his gym, even when others discourage her. Frank’s friend and employee, ex-boxer Eddie “Scrap Iron” Dupris narrates the story in non-dialogue scenes. After Dunn eventually agrees to train Maggie, she fights her way up to the women’s welterweight boxing division, winning many of her fights with first-round knockouts. Lacking a close relationship with his own daughter, who returns his letters unopened, Dunn comes to establish a strong bond with Maggie, whose own family cares little for her well-being. When Maggie buys her mother a house with some of her winnings, she berates Maggie for risking her and Maggie’s sister’s … More:
