When Boxing Was Boxing is a photographic celebration of the sport’s heyday. It’s a beautifully illustrated tribute to an age when the noble art was a little more dignified, and a little less preoccupied with money and the politics of sport. It’s about a time when there weren’t quite so many governing bodies, nor multiple world ‘champions’ viewed only by tiny audiences on pay-per-view channels; a time when boxing was once regarded as the pinnacle of professional sporting endeavor, and not just a lucrative arm of the leisure and entertainment business.  With special features on the sport’s grassroots, its particular customs, culture and curiosities, and its more lighthearted moments, this is an affectionate and wonderfully nostalgic look at a time when boxing really was boxing.

$15.17

The first book of its kind dedicated to an assessment of the legality of boxing, The Legality of Boxing: A Punch Drunk Love? assesses the legal response to prize fighting and undertakes a current analysis of the status of boxing in both criminal legal theory and practice. In this book, Anderson exposes boxing?s ‘exemption’ from contemporary legal and social norms. Reviewing all aspects of boxing – historical, legal, moral, ethical, philosophical, medical, racial and regulatory – he concludes that the supposition that boxing has a (consensual) immunity from the ordinary law of violence, based primarily on its social utility as a recognised sport, is not as robust as is usually assumed. It: suggests that the sport is extremely vulnerable to prosecution and might in fact already be illegal under English criminal lawoutlines the physical and financial exploitation suffered by individual boxers both inside and outside the ring, suggesting that standard boxing contracts are coercive thus illegal and that boxers do not give adequate levels of informed consent to participateadvocates a number of fundamental reforms, including possibly that the sport will have to consider banning blows to the headproposes the creation of a national boxing commission in the US and a similar entity in the United Kingdom, which together would attempt to restore the credibility of a sport long know as the red-light district of sports administration. An excellent book, it is a must read for all those studying sports law, popular culture and the law and jurisprudence.

Are today's boxers better than their predecessors, or is modern boxing a shadow of its former self? Boxing historians discuss the socioeconomic and demographic changes that have affected the quality, prominence and popularity of the sport over the past century. Among the interviewees are world-renowned scholars, some of the sport's premier trainers, and former amateur and professional world champions. Chapters cover such topics as the ongoing deterioration of boxers' skills, their endurance, the decline in the number of fights and the psychological readiness of championship-caliber boxers. The strengths and weaknesses of today's superstars are analyzed and compared to those of such past greats as Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jack Dempsey and Jake LaMotta.

Boxing has a long and eventful history and its drama, excitement and humor are covered in this fascinating account of the noble—and sometimes ignoble—art all over the world. It covers the bare-knuckle days when the Duke of Cumberland callously abandoned his protégé Jack Broughton when the latter could no longer fight on because he was blind as well as the famous fight in 1964, when the charismatic Muhammad Ali knocked out Sonny Liston with a phantom punch that no one in the audience saw thrown. It also highlights the advent in the 21st century of the dreaded Beast from the East, the 7-foot-tall Russian Nikolai Valuev who powered his inexorable way to the world heavyweight title. This book presents a vivid picture of the sport rightly referred to as the hardest game

Boxing seemed to spring up in Detroit as early as 1900: heavyweight champ Jim Jeffries and future heavyweight champ Tommy Burns fought that year. With the emergence of Joe Louis in the 1930s and Thomas Mearns in the late 1970s, Motown enjoyed surges of interest in the sport. At the dawn of a new millenium, the presence of three casinos has given the sport another revival of interest in the city.Metro Detroit Boxing showcases over 180 photographs that reveal not only the personalities who have enlivened the sport in the Detroit area, but also the places in which boxers, trainers, managers, and promoters fought, trained, lived, worked, and recreated. Photographs include where Joe Louis went to school, trained, and fought. Various boxing celebrities, including Muhammad Ali, are caught for the camera, socializing with eminent politicians and other figures of the day.

Chapters: Stranger Than Paradise, Howard the Duck, Major League, Major League Ii, the Rocker, the Soloist, Welcome to Collinwood, American Splendor, the Fortune Cookie, Light of Day, Antwone Fisher, Against the Ropes, the Oh in Ohio, the Kid From Cleveland. Excerpt: Against the Ropes Against the Ropes is a 2004 drama movie . It was directed by Charles S. Dutton , in his motion-picture directorial debut. It is a fictionalized account of the American boxing manager Jackie Kallen , who was the first woman to become a success in the sport. Luther Shaw most likely represents James Toney , a boxer whom Kallen managed to a title despite a rocky relationship. Against the Ropes grossed less than $6 million in the US and was panned by critics, in part because of the resemblance to nearly all the other boxing movies, such as the Rocky series. As with other such movies, its climax is a bout for the championship. The film was shot primarily in Hamilton, Ontario , Canada at the Copps Coliseum . Plot The film begins with Jackie learning the boxing game with her father and uncle in a small gym when she is just a small girl. Later, she becomes the assistant to a Cleveland boxing promoter. Jackie’s boss then begins doing business with Sam LaRocca, a sports manager, during a middleweight championship fight. After the fight, LaRocca asks Jackie what she thought of the fight. Obviously unimpressed with Jackie’s knowledge of boxing, LaRocca offers her the fight’s loser’s contract for a dollar. She goes to visit the fighter at home, only to find him addicted to drugs. Enter Luther Shaw, a small time hood, based partly on James Toney . Kallen watches in mixed horror and fascination as Shaw pummels the former middleweight champ. She offers to manage him professionally. Although Shaw is at first hesitant,

The first set of Laws is drafted, based mainly on the Cambridge University Rules . The purpose is to regulate English football under a single code of rules, but the rugby football clubs do not join because of the ball handling issue. Their attempt at compromise between the “dribbling” and “handling” codes is rejected by the dribblers and so rugby football becomes in time an entirely separate sport. The FA rules establish association football (aka football or “soccer”) as a distinct sport. item Apart from their main purpose of introducing standard rules of play and procedure, the Laws seek to differentiate between association football and rugby football. The essential difference in the two codes is encapsulated in Laws 9 and 11 which state that no (outfield) player shall run with the ball (in his hands) and that no (outfield) player shall throw the ball or pass it to another with his hands. The Laws will be amended later to clarify the situation at throw ins and during possession by goalkeepers but the FA is emphatic from the start that “hand ball” is illegal during normal play. item These Laws are originally known as the “London Rules” because they are only adopted by some London clubs and hardly anywhere else. Several clubs existed in Sheffield at the time and they played to the socalled Sheffield Rules . Gradually the FA, led by Charles Alcock , manages to persuade the clubs that a uniform set of rules is desirable and, after many adaptations and compromises, the FA rules eventually become standard. item The rejection of
